When reflecting on the time I spent reading the book “Would You Rather” to my children, it brings to mind the choices that business owners face when selling their businesses or investment properties. It’s akin to a real-life version of “Would You Rather”: writing a cheque to a charity or writing a cheque to the government. While the answer may seem obvious, many business owners still opt for the latter. This article delves into the significance of leaving a legacy, the advantages of donating to charities, and strategies for maximizing the impact of charitable giving.

The Significance of Legacy:

Legacy holds different meanings for different individuals. It can manifest as a tangible or intangible influence on the world. Regardless of its form, your legacy reflects your values and determines how you will be remembered. Leaving a legacy of kindness and compassion becomes crucial if you aspire to make a difference. Moreover, your legacy extends far beyond your time on Earth, ensuring the enduring memory of your contributions.

Choosing a Charity as Your Legacy:

There are compelling reasons to select a charity as the recipient of your legacy instead of the government. Charitable organizations excel at utilizing funds efficiently, with lower overhead costs and streamlined distribution processes. This means that a greater portion of your money directly reaches those in need. Additionally, charities possess in-depth knowledge of the issues they address and can target their assistance accordingly. By supporting a charity, you build a stronger community and create lasting change. The impact of your legacy reverberates in the lives of those benefiting from the charity’s work.

Furthermore, establishing an ongoing contribution through an annuity ensures the long-term sustainability of the supported organization. In return for your support, you may receive recognition, such as a plaque or having a building or park named after you, ensuring your legacy continues to inspire. Conversely, writing a substantial cheque to the government offers no such commemoration or lasting impact.

Maximizing Your Charitable Impact:

To ensure that your donation has the greatest charitable impact, several factors should be considered:

  1. Research the organization: Ensure that their mission and work align with your charitable goals, enabling you to make a more informed decision.
  2. Consider the size of your donation: A large donation to a smaller organization can have a significant impact, whereas a small donation to a larger organization may have a limited effect. Assess where your contribution can create the most substantial change.
  3. Determine how you want your donation to be used: You can earmark funds for a specific program or project or provide flexibility for the organization to allocate resources where they are most needed. Tailoring your donation to the charity’s specific requirements maximizes its effectiveness.

Understanding the Efficiency of Charitable Giving:

The manner in which you give can be as important as the amount you give. Donating cash or using debit or credit cards is the least efficient method. Instead, consider donating marketable securities or a life insurance policy to increase your contribution while minimizing costs. Donating through a corporation rather than personally can also result in greater tax credits, benefiting both the donor and the receiving charity. By exploring these alternative methods, you can make a more meaningful difference to the causes you care about.

Conclusion:

With the inevitable rise of capital gains taxes, it is crucial for business owners considering the sale of their businesses or investment properties to explore various ways of contributing to charitable organizations. By converting capital gains into charitable giving, you benefit philanthropic causes, build a meaningful legacy, and enjoy financial advantages. Remember, the choice between writing a significant cheque to your favourite charity or the government ultimately determines the impact you leave behind. Choose wisely and make a lasting difference.
